The sewage overflows are a result of the large rain event that occurred Friday night into the day Saturday along with saturated soil conditions in the area. The discharges only happen when heavy rains or excessive snow melt are experienced. SCHD advises that recreational users of the Shiawassee River avoid contact with the water until further notice.

Minor flooding occurred throughout Shiawassee County. People are advised to use caution when traveling in low lying areas.

For further information please contact Glenn M. Chinavare, Director of Public Utilities for the City of Owosso at (989) 725-0550, Jeff Stull, Director of Public Works for the City of Durand at (989) 288-3113 or Casey D. Elliott, Director of Environmental Health, Shiawassee County Health Department at (989) 743-2390.
