A second round of winter weather that forecasters have said will likely be stronger than the first round will hit the area beginning Saturday evening and continuing through the overnight hours.

An Ice Storm Warning remains in effect for Shiawassee County until 7am Sunday January 12th.  Additionally, a Flood Warning is in effect for the Shiawassee River at Owosso until 10am Sunday January 12th.

The Flood Warning takes into account additional anticipated rainfall that would push the river into flood stage this afternoon and crest at 7.4 feet after midnight.  Actual precipitation would impact that forecast.  The river was measured at 6.9 feet early on Saturday afternoon.  Flood stage is 7 feet.

On Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids said "A second area of heavier precipitation will work across West Michigan this evening and tonight, and fall as mostly snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The area of greatest concern for power outages this evening and tonight will be along a corridor from Hastings to Lansing to Flint. This is where the highest threat for freezing rain accumulations greater than one-quarter of an inch will be. Winds will be gusty this evening and overnight, and will increase damage to ice-covered powerlines and trees. Where snow is falling, the winds will help create areas of near zero visibility. Use caution if you must travel and be prepared to lose power."

By 7pm Saturday, NWS forecast data shows heavier precipitation filling in to Shiawassee County, bringing more freezing rain which will eventually turn to all snow overnight.  The agency expects trace amounts to 1 inch of snow for Shiawassee County, after as much as another quarter to half inch of ice accumulation.

Michigan State Police has already advised drivers in the Great Lakes Bay Region to stay off the roads wherever possible.
