MEDA is a professional society with members throughout the state that attract and grow business, create and retain jobs, and make our communities a better place to live. The Awards were developed in 2020 by the Association to recognize legislators that show a passion for championing economic development work by assisting economic development efforts that affect the entire state, assisting with local economic development projects, championing the restoration of funding for economic development, participating with their local economic development organization, or sponsoring economic development legislation. Representative Frederick’s nomination came because has been a strong supporter of economic development in Michigan, leading a change in legislation that expanded the Michigan Brownfield Redevelopment Program. This legislation opened the door to a major redevelopment project in Shiawassee County that supported the growth of an existing business and will pave the way for new industrial development. In addition, Representative Frederick has been a leader in education reform, providing more flexibility to local school districts. These changes have allowed districts to offer more robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and provide students with in-demand job skills. With ongoing talent issues throughout the state, these changes have made a direct impact on the labor market across industries.

Justin Horvath said of Rep. Frederick, “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Ben for many years, starting with his service on the Owosso City Council, and have always found him to be a tireless advocate for economic development. Since becoming State Representative, he has worked hard to deliver real results that have benefitted our state’s economy, and we are grateful for his service.”
