Governor Snyder signed legislation renaming a portion of M-71 between Owosso and Corunna for Pfc. Shane Cantu, a Shiawassee County native who died in 2012 while serving in Afghanistan.
State Representative Ben Frederick's bill renames the section of roadway "Pfc. Shane Cantu Veterans Memorial Highway."
“Shane Cantu’s sacrifice has greatly impacted the communities of Owosso and Corunna,” said Frederick, of Owosso. “This memorial connecting the two cities will honor his sacrifice and bravery.”
Cantu, a 2010 graduate of Corunna High School, was killed in August 2012 after insurgents threw an explosive over a wall at the base where he was serving in Afghanistan. Cantu was a member of the Army’s 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
Installation of the signage is expected to occur in the coming weeks.

SHIAWASSEE RESD SCHOOL BUS, CAR CRASH
No Children On Bus That Struck Car Tuesday Afternoon
Updated at 9:57pm 3/6/18 - Posted by Corunna Now at 9:19pm 3/6/18
Tipsters made us aware of a school bus vs. car crash on Tuesday afternoon. Durand Superintendent Craig McCrumb told Durand Now that it was a Shiawassee RESD bus, not a Durand bus, and that there were no kids on board.
Sheriff BeGole was able to confirm that the bus was traveling eastbound on Lansing Road when a car also traveling eastbound on Newburg Road pulled in front of the bus. The crash caused minor damage to both vehicles and there were no injuries. He also affirmed there were no students on the bus.
We've reached out to Shiawassee RESD for additional information.
