The Shiawassee Youth Advisory Council is celebrating 25 years this year. Known as YAC, this group of middle and high school aged students from the Shiawassee County area dedicate their time to volunteering, philanthropy, and grantmaking in Shiawassee County.

The Shiawassee YAC was established within the Shiawassee Community Foundation in 1995 and in 1997 an endowed fund from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation was gifted to encourage youth philanthropy under the Shiawassee Community Foundation.

Dutch and Rita Bouwman served as volunteer advisors for the organization for many years before retiring in 2015. Since 2005, Shiawassee YAC has granted over $400,000 to various schools, organizations, and non-profits in the area to programs that have a positive impact on the lives of youth. To honor the 25th anniversary, the YAC planned 25 Random Acts of Kindness to complete this year. The acts include volunteering at various events, sending cards with positive messages to nursing homes, healthcare workers, and teachers, and putting together essentials kits to individuals experiencing homelessness—just to name a few! So far this year, the YAC has volunteered nearly 250 hours with plans to volunteer many more hours before the year is over. Please join in celebrating the 25th anniversary of Shiawassee YAC!

If you are holding an event and are in need of youth volunteers or would like to make a monetary donation to the YAC, please contact Lora Phelps at the Shiawassee Community Foundation at (989) 725-1093 or lora@shiacf.org, or stop by the office at 217 N Washington St, Ste 104, Owosso, MI 48867.
