Ingham County Sheriff's Office

At 5:46am Friday morning, November 13th, an Ingham County Corrections Deputy, while conducting a cell check, found inmate Michael McKerchie not to be in his cell. Authorities say that upon closer examination, it was discovered McKerchie had dismantled a mattress and used the padding to simulate his sleeping body and that he had escaped by meticulously disassembling a daylight window and the angle iron that was used to frame it.

At 5:45am on the same day, Law Enforcement Deputies took a report of a stolen pick-up a few miles from the jail. While investigating the theft they observed a suspect on the homes surveillance system. Detectives believe the image to be that of McKerchie.

Detectives also found McKerchie on Ingham County Jail surveillance video running from the facility, near the 55th District Court in Mason, time stamped at 11:23pm on Thursday, November 12th.

McKerchie is believed to be driving the stolen pick-up, which is a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado – 2WD / blue-green in color / 2 door Extended Cab / MI Reg: DRW-9448. The vehicle has a unique Deer-Fish hook decal on the driver side rear window and a tonneau cover on the bed. Detectives believe McKerchie may possibly be headed to Battle Creek, Otsego or the state of Indiana.

Both State and Federal authorities are assisting Sheriff’s Detectives with the search. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 immediately.
