Buzz began to spread on Wednesday that the annual 4th of July celebration at McCurdy Park in Corunna was cancelled for 2020.

Today the rumor is confirmed.

"With much regret, and in review of our current financial situation due to cancelation of fundraisers, sponsorships, along with continued social distancing associated with Covid 19 and our desire to keep everyone safe, we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 4th of July celebration. We are committed to making the 2021 event as good or even better. We thank everyone or their support and patience."

Corunna 4th of July Commission chairperson, Angie Fernette, released that statement through City of Corunna officials on Thursday morning.

The current stay-at-home order remains in place until May 15th. While it could be extended beyond that date, even if it is not, planning for mid- and later-year events is becoming more challenging in the absence of a clear path forward.

Some legislators and opponents of Michigan's stay-at-home order, which has been in place since March 23rd, are increasingly voicing concerns about the tradeoff of potential health and safety of residents and the lasting damage that the economy may experience.

As this announcement is delivered, a protest is underway in and around the capitol building in Lansing, with participants calling for an end to the stay-at-home order.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer will likely address these concerns in a planned televised townhall to air tonight on ABC 12, NBC 25, FOX 66 and TV5 at 7pm.
