Respite Volunteers of Shiawassee is asking for help from any mid-Michigan manufacturers that haven't already stepped up to help produce face masks, face shields or other equipment to join the fight, if they are able.

As COVID-19 cases in the county continue to increase so will the need for masks, particularly in situations like Durand Senior Care & Rehab, where more than 25 residents have been diagnosed with Coronavirus.  Helen Howard of Respite Volunteers said "The fabric face masks have to be washed daily, so they do wear out. We have some people that were instructed to use metal pieces for bend for the nose section, but these are ripping out in the wash, so these fabric face masks don't always last real long."

Howard said Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership can help connect local companies with programs to help adapt their business to the production of these types of items.

Meanwhile, Respite Volunteers announces that, already, nearly 600 face mask covers have been delivered to nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Shiawassee County just this past week, thanks to the generosity of Hospital Maskcover Task Force, Woodard Furniture Company, Mid-Michigan COVID-19 Relief Volunteers, Shiawassee Health & Wellness, many people in the community and donors from the Lansing area.

Durand Union Station is coordinating distribution of home-sewn masks and is asking for more home sewists to help create masks.  Volunteers can call for more information or can sign up by going to ShiawasseeServes.org.  Mask making instructions can be found at that site as well.  Completed masks can be dropped off to Durand Union Station between 12 and 4pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Alternate drop off times can be arranged by calling 989-288-3561.

Durand Union Station says area seamstresses have already produced several hundred masks.  If you can't sew but still want to help, 100% cotton fabric is needed for mask production and can be dropped off at the depot as well.
