The Corunna Branch of the Community District Library will be spending the week of October 19-24 celebrating its Friends of the Library group, as part of the annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week.
The Friends of the Library were established to aid the Corunna Public Library in the 1970s and continued their support when the library combined with the Shiawassee County Library system to form the Community District Library in 2004. The group has raised thousands of dollars for extras for the library branch that were beyond the library operating budget. Their efforts have helped with the purchase of furniture, flooring, landscaping, programs for patrons of all ages, special collections, and many other extras. Their major 2020 project was the financing of a new cabinet and countertop at the circulation desk and two countertop work areas for patrons. The work was done by Hemenway Custom Wood Furnishings. The Friends also contributed towards work tables for patron computers.

The Friends volunteer their time to do fundraising to support the branch. This traditionally includes annual Spring and Fall book and bake sales. The group operates a used bookstore inside the library building located at 210 E. Corunna Ave. The bookstore is open during library hours. Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10-5, Tuesday & Thursday 10-8, and Saturday 10-2.
Current officers of the organization are Mary Ziegler, president; Joyce Haak, secretary; and Roxie Miros, treasurer. The group also includes a small band of dedicated volunteers. New members are always welcome. Please contact the library at 989-743-4800 or visit the branch to learn more about membership. The group meets monthly at the library on the 3rd Tuesday at 9am. Follow the Friends of the Corunna Library on Facebook.
“Our patrons have an enriched library experience because of the Friends,” said branch manager Cathy Cramner. “The funds they raise definitely put the icing on the cake. I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how much of the library environment they enjoy, is supported by the Friends.”
National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. United for Libraries supports those who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries, and brings together library trustees, advocates, friends, and foundations into a partnership that creates a powerful force for libraries in the 21st century.
