"Approximately 57 years ago, a Historical Sign was placed on Cole Road next to the Knaggs Bridge in honor of the Knaggs Bridge area that was once an Indian Settlement. That sign had never been touched or damaged in all of those years, until about seven years ago when someone decided to steal it, most likely thinking they could get a bunch of money by taking it to a scrap yard," a Burns Grange release reads.

"Apparently whoever took it scraped the
printing off on one side and what was figured after it was found was that they decided that it wasn’t the kind of metal they thought, or since it had received so much publicity and pictures in the paper, that they better ditch it instead," the release continues.

The damaged historical marker was later found in the Shiawassee River by a kayaker and returned to the Grange.

The Burns Grange release indicates that the sign was not originally placed by the Grange, nor is it the service organization's responsibility to replace it.  "However, we feel that it should be replaced. We are hoping that the community will help to fund this project."

The total cost of replacing the marker and posts is expected to be $3,240.  Burns Grange hopes to raise the funds and get the sign ordered and reinstalled for viewing by summer.  After ordering, it will take up to 12 weeks to receive the new sign.

If you are interested in helping the Grange with this project, please send a check or money order to:

Peggy Johnston, Sec., Burns Grange #160, 404 S. Oak Street, Durand MI 48429

Your contributions will be greatly appreciated.
